Workshop

Exploring the Human Figure in Watercolor: Through Light and Shadow

With Eudes Correia

18, 19 & 20 September 2026

IMG_5122.jpeg

Dive into the captivating world of one of the contemporary masters of expressive figurative watercolor. Eudes Correia will share his technique, his vision of the subject, composition, and color.

18, 19 and 20 septembre 2026

At Atelier d’Arts Tekin

55, rue Saint-Jean

Brussels

For three days, the atelier will have the privilege of welcoming Eudes Correia, an internationally recognized watercolor artist celebrated for the expressive power of his portraits and the remarkable mastery of his technique.

His work immediately captivates through the strength of his faces, the density of his shadows, and a use of watercolor that goes far beyond the traditional idea of a light or purely decorative medium. In his hands, water becomes substance. Pigment breathes. Layers are built with remarkable precision to construct living volumes.

During this intensive workshop, participants will enter the heart of his method: a painting practice grounded in rigorous observation, a deep understanding of volumes, and a subtle control of water and pigment.

Each day alternates between full demonstrations by the artist and guided practice, allowing participants to understand his process in depth.

First day

Foundations: Drawing, Material, and the Behavior of Watercolor

The first day establishes the essential foundations. Before even beginning to paint, Eudes explains how to organize the entire working setup in order to gain both freedom and precision in the process.

Participants will explore:

Materials and preparation

  • pencil and graphite intensity

  • types of brushes and the function of each

  • choosing and organizing the palette

  • essential auxiliary materials

For Eudes Correia, technique begins even before the paint touches the paper: it starts with a deep understanding of drawing.

Fundamental notions

  • construction of volume

  • perspective and structure

  • light and shadow

  • contrast

These principles then lead into the study of watercolor itself and how it behaves on paper:

  • tonal values

  • gradients

  • connection and flow of colors

The day concludes with a complete portrait demonstration.

Eudes first paints while explaining each step of his thinking and decision-making process.

Participants then create their own work with his direct guidance and feedback.

Second day

Understanding the Face: Anatomy, Volumes, and Skin Color

The second day moves directly into the core subject of the workshop: the human face.

Eudes approaches the head as a three-dimensional structure. Every plane, every volume, and every variation of light contributes to bringing the portrait to life.

Participants will work in particular on:

  • understanding the face in three dimensions

  • the main volumes of the head

  • the study of skin tones

  • understanding cast shadows

  • distinguishing between soft and hard shadows

  • chromatic variations in areas of shadow and light

As on the previous day, the session revolves around a complete watercolor portrait demonstration.

Watching Eudes paint is an experience in itself: pigment is placed with confidence, forms emerge almost spontaneously, and tonal values gradually organize themselves to reveal the presence of the model.

After the demonstration, participants will paint their own portrait with the artist’s precise guidance and feedback.

Third day

Composition, Movement, and Expression

The third day broadens the focus. The goal is no longer only to paint a face, but to construct a strong and expressive image.

Eudes explains how a composition can tell a story and convey emotion.

Participants will explore:

• the principles of composition in a painting

• different narrative structures in pictorial composition

• movement and body expression

• the essential elements of an expressive painting

The Method of Eudes Correia

One of the distinctive aspects of Eudes Correia’s technique is the construction of the watercolor in two main layers.

This approach allows the painting to remain both spontaneous and structured.

During the demonstrations:

  1. Eudes paints the first layer in front of the participants

  2. the students then paint this first stage

  3. the artist paints the second and final layer

  4. the students then complete their own painting

This method allows participants to understand precisely the rhythm of the painting process, the management of paper humidity, and the way pigment can be controlled while preserving its vitality.
